Reclaim Energy has introduced a new CO₂ split system heat pump hot water range to the Australian market, manufactured by Panasonic, and it is one of the more significant releases in the category this year. Rather than the standard synthetic refrigerants used in most heat pumps, this range runs on natural CO₂ (R744), the same approach that has made CO₂ heat pumps popular in New Zealand and parts of Europe for years, now built and tuned for Australian conditions.

For homeowners, the headline news is simple: a heat pump hot water system with a higher efficiency rating, quieter operation, flexible split-system installation, and full smartphone control, backed by a 10-year parts and labour warranty.

Addison Appliances is now installing the new range across Melbourne. Here is what's new about it, how it stacks up between the two available outputs, and what to expect from the installation itself.

Why the split design matters: because the compressor and the tank are not built as one unit, the tank can go inside a laundry, garage or plant room while the smaller outdoor unit sits somewhere discreet. Useful for homes where there is no good spot for a bulky all-in-one heat pump near the house.
How It Works

Powerful efficiency. Natural refrigerant.

A heat pump hot water system does not generate heat the way a gas or electric storage unit does. Instead, it works like a reverse air conditioner, extracting ambient heat from the outside air and transferring it into your water, using only a fraction of the electricity that direct heating would require.

The outdoor unit draws in ambient air and compresses the CO₂ refrigerant, which raises its temperature significantly. That heat is transferred to the water inside the tank through a heat exchanger. Because CO₂ can be compressed to a much higher pressure than conventional refrigerants, it reaches higher water temperatures more efficiently. The Panasonic range produces hot water at 65°C without needing an electric backup element, even when the outside air temperature drops to −10°C.

The heat pump itself only does half the job. The storage tank needs to match how many people are drawing hot water from it, and how often. Panasonic's tanks for this range are designed and manufactured in Australia, available in three capacities.

Getting tank size wrong is the most common heat pump mistake we see. An undersized tank means running out of hot water at peak times; an oversized tank wastes standing energy. We factor in household size, fixture count and usage patterns, usually from photos of your setup, before we recommend a tank.

Save With Rebates

Rebates and incentives available in Australia

Hot water is typically one of the largest energy costs in an Australian home, often accounting for a significant share of the total household energy bill. Because heat pump hot water systems use so much less electricity than gas or standard electric storage systems, governments continue to support the switch through several incentive schemes.

A federal incentive under the Renewable Energy Target, available to every eligible household in Australia regardless of state or income. Installing an eligible heat pump hot water system generates a number of tradeable certificates, calculated from the system's climate zone and its estimated energy output over a set deeming period. Your installer typically claims these on your behalf and passes the value on as an upfront discount at the time of installation, so there is no separate rebate to apply for after the fact.
A Victorian state scheme, separate from STCs and separate from Solar Victoria's own rebate. Replacing an eligible existing hot water system, such as an old electric storage or gas unit, with a qualifying heat pump generates certificates based on the estimated energy savings. Like STCs, these are redeemed as a point-of-sale discount through an accredited provider rather than claimed directly by the homeowner. There is no household income test for most VEU upgrades, including heat pump hot water systems, so eligibility comes down to your existing system and the new unit's efficiency rating rather than what you earn.

Solar Victoria eligibility update, effective 1 July 2026: Solar Victoria's own household rebate and interest-free loan, worth up to $1,400 and separate to the VEEC and STC certificates above, has tightened its income test.

This is combined household taxable income across all owners on the title. The property must also be valued under $3 million, and the address must not have received a solar or hot water rebate through the program in the past 10 years. This change only affects Solar Victoria's own rebate and loan. It does not change VEEC or STC eligibility, which remain open to Victorian households regardless of income.

The Panasonic warranty

Every unit in the range is backed by the same cover, regardless of capacity or tank size.

Parts and labour are covered for ten years, conditions apply. Warranty terms should be confirmed at the time of your installation booking.
Correct plumbing, electrical and refrigerant line installation matters. Heat pump hot water installations in Australia must be carried out by experienced, trained installers in line with relevant Australian Standards. This is not a DIY job. An improper installation can void your manufacturer warranty.
