Choosing a freestanding oven: dual fuel or induction, 60cm, 90cm or 120cm

A freestanding oven, also called a freestanding cooker, upright cooker or upright stove, puts the cooktop and oven in one unit that stands in the gap between your benchtops. Most of the freestanding cookers our customers ask us to install are 90cm dual fuel models, with gas burners over an electric oven, though more Melbourne households are choosing induction to get off gas.

Pick a budget or a size to see the matching cookers from Westinghouse, Smeg, Fisher & Paykel, Bosch, Electrolux, Bertazzoni, Falcon and La Cornue. Compare up to three side by side, then check one fits your gap. Our team handles freestanding oven installation across Melbourne, from the gas and the circuit to any cabinet work.

2Check the fit

Will it fit, and what does it need on the day?

Enter the width of your gap and the cookers that fit are outlined. Pick one to see it drawn to scale in your gap, and what happens with the cabinets, the gas and your switchboard, worked out from that model’s own installation figures. Height is rarely an issue: freestanding cookers stand on adjustable feet, which we set to your bench. If a cooker is wider than your gap, our team modifies the cabinet as part of the installation.

FAQs

Freestanding oven questions

Yes. Freestanding oven, freestanding cooker, upright cooker and upright stove all describe the same appliance: an oven with a cooktop on top, standing on its own feet between your cabinets. Dual fuel models pair a gas cooktop with an electric oven; induction models are all electric. A wall oven is different: it’s built into the cabinetry, with a separate cooktop in the bench.
Measure the gap between the cabinets either side, at bench height. Most Melbourne kitchens have a 60cm or 90cm gap. The 60cm cookers here are 596 to 600 mm wide and the 90cm cookers 895 to 900 mm, so each suits its standard gap. The 100 to 120cm cookers are 995 to 1195 mm wide. Enter your gap in the fit check and the cookers that fit are outlined.
Usually, yes. A 90cm cooker is about 300 mm wider, so the cabinet beside the gap is cut back to make room. Our team handles the cabinet modification as part of the installation, along with moving the gas point if it ends up in the wrong spot and checking the circuit against the new cooker’s rating. Send us a photo of the gap and the cabinets either side and we can quote all of it together.
The 16 main cookers are the freestanding cookers our customers ask us to install most, based on the models named in the enquiries we receive. The boutique cookers are chosen for design and finish instead, because people rarely choose those on price or volume. Every figure in the guide comes from the manufacturer’s spec sheet or our reviews-site catalogue.
A freestanding cooker with a gas cooktop and an electric oven. You get the flame and wok burner of gas on top, and the even heat and fan functions of an electric oven below. It needs a gas connection plus an electrical connection for the oven, which is much smaller than an induction cooker’s: 2.2 to 5.2 kW for the dual fuel models here.
If you’re replacing a gas upright, almost always: there’s no suitable circuit there today, so our electrical team runs a new dedicated one from the switchboard. Westinghouse’s two induction cookers are rated to run from 40 A. If you’re replacing an electric upright, the existing circuit may be reusable if the cable and protection suit the new cooker’s rating. Our team confirms the suitability of your switchboard before installation is undertaken. Use the fit check to see where your model sits.
Usually, yes, but it’s more than a cooker swap. The wider boutique cookers here are 995 to 1195 mm wide, so the cabinet on one or both sides is cut back by about 95 to 295 mm. Our team handles the cabinet modification as part of the installation, along with the gas or circuit work. Send a photo of the gap with a tape measure across it and we can quote all of it together.
With the oven door open, a freestanding cooker can tip forward if someone leans on the door or a child climbs on it. Manufacturers supply a chain, bracket or plate to anchor the cooker to the wall or floor. Bertazzoni says fixing only one of its two chains makes the installation non-compliant. We fit and check it on every cooker we install.
Victorian Energy Upgrades offers an indicative discount of about $140 (based on a $70 certificate price, so it moves) on a freestanding cooker with an induction cooktop when it replaces a gas cooktop. You need to be a Victorian household in a home built at least 2 years ago, and not have claimed the discount before. The cooker must be electric only, with three or more independently controlled zones and at least a 2-year warranty. The discount is processed by a VEU accredited provider using your invoice and a recent gas bill. Addison Appliances is not an accredited provider for cooktops, so we don’t apply it on our quote; we handle the installation, and the provider list is on energy.vic.gov.au.
